The Apple TV - Your Presentation on the Big Screen

Written by Alex Dixon

You may have seen an Apple TV before: It's a little Black Box that plugs into your HDTV and lets you stream Videos & Photos or listen to Music stored on your computer. You may even have one at home. Many people don't realise that as well as being an excellent way to watch your Films at home, it can also be a very powerful Business Tool.

ATV PFOH SCREEN

If your office has a dedicated Meeting Room, you probably have an HDTV or Projector, for making presentations to clients. You fiddle around with Cables and Connectors, and hook your laptop up to show a PowerPoint Presentation.

Did you know that with an Apple TV, you can stream whatever is on your screen straight to the Apple TV? This means no fiddling with wires and settings, all you need to do is click an icon in your menu bar, and your screen is beamed over the wireless network, straight to the HDTV or Projector.

You can also use the included remote to step through your PowerPoint Presentation, meaning you don't need to be bent over your computer screen to give a presentation. You can set your Company Logo or a selection of images to cycle through, when you are not using the Apple TV.

This technology is called AirPlay Mirroring. As long as you have a Mac with Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion installed, you do not have to install any additional software to take advantage of this.

Setting up your Apple TV

This is what you need to do to setup your Apple TV:

1. Connect the Power Cable to the Apple TV

2. Connect an HDMI cable between your Apple TV and HDTV

3. Follow the setup guide on the Apple TV, using the included remote, which will take you through connecting it to your wireless network

Show your Screen on the HDTV

It's very easy and straightforward to stream your screen onto the HDTV, just follow these steps:

1. Make sure you are connected to the same wireless network as the Apple TV

2. You'll notice that a new icon appears on the Menu Bar, at the top-right hand side of the screen. Click on this.

3. Select your Apple TV from the drop down list.

Your screen will now appear on the HDTV.

What about Sound?

Playing Music & Video does not require any additional steps. As long are you are showing your screen, all sound from the Computer is also streamed to the HDTV/Projector.

This sounds expensive...

Not at all! The Apple TV is only £99 including VAT, and is much cheaper than a dedicated PC. It looks more professional too!

What is Desktop Virtualization?

Written by Oxford Mac

Desktop virtualization is a method in which one machine can run more than one Operating System at the same time regardless of architecture requirements. There are two models of Desktop Virtualization that will be discussed here: Local Virtualization and the Client/Server Virtualization Model.

Small business owners and Entrepreneurs wear many hats. They have certain strengths and a drive to make money using the skills that they have. But there are many facets to running a business. Someone needs to do the accounting, the networking, inventory, manage employees, do sales calls and more. Then, someone needs to manage the technology.

The purpose of a solid business network is to iron out the chaos of running multiple computers whose users need to access and share files and documents. With sharing comes the need to restrict some users from certain files, all while protecting your IT infrastructure from the inside and out.
